Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Early Breeding Sale of Ewes, Gimmer Shearlings and Rams, Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Monday 26th July 2021

PRIME LAMBS
The lamb trade remains buoyant this week with all lambs forward averaging £106.82 or 257p/kg. The entry of 769 forward was met with plenty of demand and easily bid for from a busy ring of buyers.

Heavy weight Texel lambs led the way selling to £139 from H Birkett & Son, Overton, followed by Suffolks to £133 from GF & EE Holt, Chipping. Also breaking the £130 barrier were Texel lambs to £131 from J S Horner, Ingleton. Numerous more pens of lambs easily sold beyond the £120 mark.

Beltex lambs sold to a top of 318p/kg from J S Horner, Ingleton with others from the same consignment selling to 310p/kg and 298p/kg. Plenty of pens of better shaped lambs were regularly selling at the 290p/kg mark. Mules today sold to £93 weighing 38kg from JM & JJ Dawson, Littledale.

CAST SHEEP
The cast sheep trade remains good with all specifications of sheep eagerly bid for. Leading the way today were Continental ewes to £116 from CF Hargreaves, Overton. This was followed by Texel ewes to £111 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth and £110 from WA & LM Jenkinson, Stalmine. Masham ewes sold to £106 from L Campbell, Crook. Mule ewes twice sold to £97 from CF Hargreaves and B & SE Carter, Ellel with Mule ewes regularly selling in the £90’s.

Upland ewes sold to £99 for Cheviots from R Duran, Winmarleigh. Horned sheep peaked at £82 for Dalesbreds from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock.

BREEDING SHEEP
The opening sale of breeding sheep saw good quality young sheep in big demand and eagerly bid for, with older sheep meeting a mixed trade. The sale commenced with breeding rams that saw the trade peak at £550 and £500 for Texels from M & S Blease, Carnforth. Charollais tups sold to £450 from MS & A Lee, Arkholme.

Good quality Continental gimmer shearlings met a blistering trade with pure bred Texel gimmer shearlings from M & S Blease, Carnforth selling to £265, £255, £245, £230 and £200. Texel x shearlings sold to £250 from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale with others to £240 and £200 from Bargh Contractors, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe. Blue De Maine x shearlings sold to £190 from S Rossall.

Mule shearlings from DJ Casson & Son, Slyne led the way selling to £180 and £175 twice. Suffolk x ewes sold to £150 from PD Anderton, Scorton, with three crop Texel ewes also selling to £150 from J & MT Miller, Claughton on Brock.
