Store Cattle

The weekly sale of store cattle had a similar number forward with all classes of cattle a strong trade especially well-grown 18-22-month-old grazing type bullocks, with a couple of fresh faces present to purchase these. The market was topped by DE & SM Moorhouse, who sold British Blue and Limousin bullocks to £1340 with another pen from the same home selling to £1250. Angus steers topped at £1280 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with British Blues selling to £1270 from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn followed EW & CR Clegg & Son, Stalmine. Native bullocks saw Herefords to £1250 from SH & LE Birkett, Nether Kellet with this price also achieved for Angus’ from PD Anderton, Scorton. Closely followed by £1240 for Angus’ from J Oddie & Son. Plenty more bullocks sold around the £1200 mark. Heifers peaked at £1320 for British Blues from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Natland with Limousin from the same home selling to £1260.

Angus heifers sold to £1170 from B & D Willison & Son, Levens with other Angus heifers selling to £1150 from JS & KM Wilson & Son. A couple of British Blue heifers from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling sold to £1160.

All bullocks forward this week sold to a market average of £1047.

Cast Cows

The weekly sale of Cast Cows had an increased entry of 143 forward, a slightly easier trade as some buyers being cautious over what may prevail over the coming weeks. Leading the way was British Blue cast steers selling to 181.5p/kg from CG Birkett, Carnforth. Limousin OTM Heifers from JM Capstick, Ashton with Stodday sold to 179.5p/kg and 177.5p/kg or the top-grossing price of £1224. Stabiliser cast steers sold to a top of £1220 from MG & HM Capstick, Milnthorpe.

Black and white heifers sold to a top of 161.5p/kg or £1085 from K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Cast cows saw beef cows sell to 157.5p/kg for Charolais from JF & AW Sutton, Longsleddale. Other beef cows sold around the 150p/kg mark. OTM Black and white cows sold to a top of 134.5p/kg from WG Farms, Cockerham. Other good black and white cows sold around the 130p/kg. Beef cast cows sold to a top of £1046 from NJ & L Allan, Killington. Black and white cows sold to a top of £983 from Lawson Farms, Cockerham with plenty more dairy cows selling in excess of £950.

Cast bulls this week sold to a top of £1161 from W Pinder, Newton in Bowland.

The overall market average was 114p/kg today.

Calves

The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster had an entry of 70 forward. The market this week peaked at £350 for Charolais bull calf from WG Farms, Cockerham who sold British Blue to £340 and £325 with Angus’ to £305. David and Eileen Wallbank, Over Wyresdale sold Angus bull calves to £305 and Angus heifers to £290 and £275. Hereford bull calves sold to £285 from Messrs Mason, Over Kellet. British Blue heifer calves peaked at £275 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham with plenty of strong beef calves selling at £250 plus.

Lancaster has enjoyed a strong trade over recent weeks for black and white calves, selling to £105 and £95 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green followed by £90 from B Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal. Plenty of nice rearing sorts were selling in the seventies and eighties.
