CALVES
A pleasing entry of 124 were forward with all calves selling to a flying trade from start to finish with Blue bulls twice flying to £600 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick with other Blue bulls selling to £520 from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth. All Blue bulls averaged an impressive £414.
A run of Charolais calves from Lawkland Hall peaked at £460 with Limousin bulls selling to the same price from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. Native bred bulls were keenly bid for with Angus bulls twice selling to £440 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and JAH Walton & Son, Kirkby Stephen. A run of Hereford bulls from JS & IM Wilson & Son, Whitbeck sold to £370 with many from this run selling at £350 plus.
Heifer calves once again sold to a strong trade with Hereford heifers twice selling to £310 from Bambers Farm, Lancaster and JS & IM Wilson & Son, Whitbeck. HJK Robinson & Son finished off a wonderful day in the calf ring selling Angus heifers to £310; the same price was also achieved for Blue heifers from WH Kitching & Son, Hale. Many Continental calves were selling well into the £300s with some buyers leaving empty handed.
Black and whites once again all sold to a strong trade. Weaned black and white calves sold to £230 from WH Kitching & Son with other weaned calves selling to £215 from Lawkland Hall. Medium type rearing black and white bulls were regularly selling between the £120 - £150 mark with all forward averaging £110.
STIRKS
All stirks forward once again sold to a fast trade at J36 with Blue bullocks selling to £860 from Whitestone Farms, Shap with Limousin bullocks selling to £820 from NJ Strickland & Son, Whinfell, with other Limousin bullocks from the same home selling to £760.
A run of black and white stirks from PD & PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal sold to £690 with others from the same home selling to £620. Blue heifers from Kirby and Longworth, Dunnerdale sold to £650 with others selling to £620 from B Butterfield & Son.
STORES
The heat was back on in the store cattle ring today at J36, with all vendors leaving pleased with their day’s trade, with many more cattle needed to fulfil a keen ringside of buyers.
The sale topped at £1290 for a British Blue bullock from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton, with other Blue bullocks selling to £1240 (12 months old) from R Airey & Son, Ravenstonedale. A full pen of Charolais bullocks from RJ & R Holden, Millom sold to £1250 with yearling Charolais bullocks selling to £1040 from JC Walling & Son, Lyth.
The heifer trade topped at £1200 for a Blue heifer from RJ & J Holden, Millom who also sold Charolais heifers to £1100. TW Nelson & Son, Stainton sold a strong run of Limousin heifers to £1160. Yearling grazing heifers were a flying trade with Charolais selling to £1090 from JC Walling & Son, Lyth with other Charolais selling to £965 from AMS Robinson, Staveley.
Strong black and white bullocks sold to £940 from RJ & J Holden, Millom with yearling Fleckveih bullocks from RJ Corlett & Son, Cockermouth selling to £770. Belted Galloway bullocks sold to an impressive £880 from W Stamper, Chipping.
With a continued rise in the current beef price and the grass continuing to grow, demand for all store cattle is strong and vendors are advised to enter cattle with confidence for our next sale on Thursday 8th July 2021.
CULL COWS AND OTM CATTLE
Cull cows continue to be a strong trade with an overall market average of 144p/kg with over half the entry being dairy cows.
Beef cows sold to a top price of 177.5p/kg for a Stabiliser cow from A Dixon & Son who sold others at 171.5p/kg. Limousin x cows sold to 174.5p/kg from SJ & NS Wood, British Blue x to 167.5p/kg from AW & AM Clarke and Charolais x to 164.5p/kg from JC Walling & Son. Medium beef cows generally 150p/kg – 160p/kg with keen interest in cows suitable for further finishing.
Dairy cows sold to 161.5p/kg from J Scott & Co with others selling to 149.5p/kg for Fleckveih from JJ & MA Park & Son, medium dairy cows generally 120p/kg – 140p/kg.
Top grossing today was a Friesian cow from J Scott & Co achieving £1261 closely followed by a Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son.
OTM heifers sold to 179.5p/kg and £1051 for a Holstein Friesian from JM Barton & Son with others 145p/kg – 160p/kg.
A single OTM steer from JE Read achieved 139.5p/kg and £1145.
