J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 17th September 2021

CALVES AND WEANLINGS
Lancaster had a bumper entry of 130 calves and weanlings forward with all specifications eagerly bid for. A consignment of 12-week-old British Blues from J&G Thornley, Kirkham saw bull calves to £525 and £500, this was followed by a much admired 8-week-old British Blue bull from Barbers Farms, Claughton on Brock selling to £480 with other 8-week-old British Blue bulls to £465 from Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton. Charolais bull calves peaked at £475 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. A run of Hereford weanlings from TE & M Kidd, Ellel sold bulls to £470 and heifers to £465, plenty of good quality calves today sold in the region of £400 and more. Black and White bull calves twice peaked at £220 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre with all eagerly bid for, as Black and White calves averaged £118.

STORE CATTLE
Lancaster had an offering of 280 store cattle forward, the quality of cattle this week was better than seen in previous weeks and which in turn was met with a good trade. Limousin bullocks took top spot this week selling to £1500 from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton with Simmentals from the same home selling to £1420. Other leading prices for continental bullocks saw British Blues sell to £1440 from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Native cattle always meet plenty of demand at Lancaster, with Aberdeen Angus bullocks selling to £1460 from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine. A pen of four South Devons from TE&A Galbraith, Crooklands sold to £1450. Plenty of strong forward bullocks easily selling in excess of £1300 mark.
The heifer trade peaked at £1360 for a Limousin from JW Atkinson, Bentham with others from the same home selling at £1350. Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1170 for Black and Whites from H Birkett & Son, Overton with plenty more pens of strong bullocks easily selling in excess of the £1100 mark.

OTM CATTLE
There was a good entry 124 cast cows forward this week which was met by the usual busy ring of buyers ensuring Lancaster cows continue to be one of the strongest trades in the area. There was an overall market average of 141p/kg. As per usual OTM heifers were eagerly bid for with British Blues selling to 209.5p/kg or £1342 from AG&GM Rollinson, Killington. This was followed by Limousin heifers to 204.5p/kg from RJ & H Preece, Roeburndale West, with Limousin OTM heifers peaking at £1286. Limousin cast steers sold to 199.5p/kg from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling. Black and White OTM heifers sold to 189.5p/kg or £1273 from JE ME & JP Seed, Claughton-on-Brock. Limousin cast cows sold to a top of 209p/kg from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton, with Limousin cows peaking at £1441 from TE SJ & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. Plenty of beef cows regularly selling in excess of £1200. Plenty of well fleshed dairy cows regularly selling between 150-160p/kg with best type dairy cows selling in excess of this. Dairy cows sold to a top of £1275 from DE & SM Moorehouse, Natland, with others selling to £1249 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham. Plenty of dairy cows easily selling in excess of £1100.
