Prime Hoggs

As seen throughout the country prime hoggs have taken a drop with a large amount of lamb meat being important from abroad and many wholesalers struggling to market hoggs at the moment. A larger number of hoggs forward in the market today, as many start to sell with the large costs of feeding the hoggs and lambing time sneaking ever closer. A full complement of prime hogg buyers saw in double figures of buyers present. Heavy weight hoggs continue to add up best pounds in the bank even though the trade for them was back.
Heavies sold to a top of £138.50 for Suffolks from WT Whittaker& Son, Nether Kellet with other Suffolks to £134 from G Riley, Bolton le Sand. Heavy weight Texel’s peaked at £137 from HJ Cornthwaite, Cartmel Fell followed by others to £136.50 from N Barker, Burton in Kendal, £132 from J Dickinson, Milnthorpe and £131 and £130 from EJ & AM Fox, Biggar. There were plenty more heavy weight hoggs selling in the mid to late one hundred and twenties. Upland heavy weight hoggs sold to £137 and £126 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal with heavy weight Cheviots selling to £122.50 from EJ & AM Fox, Biggar with Mules from the same home peaking at £110. Better bred conformation hoggs were still creating plenty of interest selling to a top of 300p/kg from EJ & AM Fox, Biggar with others to 285p/kg from G & MA Jackson, Little Eccleston. Handy weighted hoggs saw well fleshed inside fed regularly selling in the region of 220-230p/kg. Light weight hoggs sold to mixed demand. Horned hoggs saw in specification weight hoggs selling in the region of 200p/kg. There was an entry of 1356 hoggs forward selling to a market average of 210p/kg.

Cast Sheep

650 ewes were forward selling to another competitive trade at Junction 36, the sale peaked at £148 for Suffolk ewes from R&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe. Texels ewes from PK&R Woof, Stainton sold to £140 with others to £138. The best bred Texels ewes were regularly away in the top one hundred and thirties. Mule ewes sold to £108 from JW Robinson & Son, Farlton with others to £106 from EJ&M Redmayne, Samlesbury. Medium fit Mules were regularly selling at the £80-£85 pound mark. The hill ewe trade will be a little less on the week, topping at £84 for Dalesdbred from M Tyson, Lupton with Cheviots selling to £79 from SH&PI Bowes, Barrow in Furness who sold full pens of Scotch Black Face to £72.
