J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM and Store Cattle, Thursday 7th March 2024

CALVES & WEANLINGS

A larger entry of 139 rearing calves saw the strongest bull calves sell to £690 for an Aberdeen Angus from Colby Farms Ltd, Appleby with others from this home achieving £585. British Blues sold to £655 from J&R Waller, Killington with others from this home at £505. Other British Blues achieved £620 from W Stamper, Chipping. Charollais bulls sold to £495 from Bambers Farms, Cockerham with Blonde bulls to £460 from R Heath, Bootle. The strongest bull calves sold above £450, with the next level regularly selling at £320 to £400 and smaller milk calves around the £280 to £300 mark.
A good trade was seen for dairy bull calves with R&J Dodgson, Natland selling a Friesian to £330 and Fleckvieh to £300. All strong dairy bred bulls reached the £150 mark.
Weaned heifer calves sold to £640 for a British Blue from W Stamper, Chipping followed by a Blonde at £590 from R Heath, Bootle. The strongest rearing heifer calves sold to £400 for a British Blue from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg with others from this home at £370. British Blues sold to £360 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and Longhorns sold to £340 from Bambers Farm, Cockerham. Rearing heifer calves were regularly £300 plus.

STIRKS

Steers stirks sold to £980 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus cross (10 months old) from JJ&J Towers, Ulverston. Limousins and Aberdeen Angus cross (8 months old) selling to £870 from Bambers Farm, Cockerham who also sold dairy steers to £760.
Heifer stirks sold to £780 for a pair of 10 month old Aberdeen Angus cross from JJ&J Towers, Ulverston. A 6 month old Limousin bull from Shuttleworth & Brown, Sedbergh sold at £900.

STORE CATTLE

The catalogue entry of 602 store cattle was met by a packed ring side of buyers ensuring a blistering trade from start to finish. The pre sale show was kindly sponsored by MB Nutrition and WCF Fuels, who we thank for their continued support. The sale peaked at £1840 for a trio of South Devon heifers from AT Threlkeld, Ulverston. British Blue bullocks sold to £1810 from JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Selside, other strong Limousins sold to £1690 from the same good home. The best end yearly bullocks were well sort after with the best seeing Limousins sell to £1710 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. A pair of Charolais sold to £1640 from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon with British Blues to £1640 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Regularly away the best end yearly bullocks were £1500 to £1550, with nice summering sorts £1100 to £1250. Native bullocks saw Hereford to £1620 from M Howarth, Grange Over Sands. Aberdeen Angus sold to £1550 from M Moorhouse, Grange Over Sands. Yearling Blonde heifers sold to £1580 from TW&C Shepherd, Under Barrow with Limousins selling to £1490 from JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Selside and £1440 from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. The best suckler bred heifers were £1340 to £1400, with nice grazing sorts £1050 to £1150.

A bigger entry of bulls forward met plenty of interest with Blonde bulls selling to £1540 from MJ Whitworth, Bolton Le Sands with Salers to £1460 from M Allen, Carnforth and British Blues to £1360 from S Bosworth, Burnley.

OTM / CAST CATTLE

The fortnightly sale of cull cows saw an entry of predominately dairy cows forward, with an overall market average of 157p/kg. The best beef cows sold to 249.5p/kg for a Limousin from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale with other feeding type beef cows generally 140p/kg to 160p/kg. Top grossing was also a Limousin from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale achieving £1729. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 181.5p/kg from WH Kitching & Son, Sedgwick with others generally 165p/kg to 180p/kg. Top price of £1471 was achieved for a Holstein Friesian from WH Kitching & Son, Sedgwick.
OTM heifers sold to 257.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton and £1613 for a Holstein Friesian from WB Winder & Co, Broughton in Furness.
OTM steers sold to 269.5p/kg and £1708 for British Blue cross from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton.
Cull bulls sold to 194.5p/kg for a Charollais from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness and a British Blue from B&R Barnes, Carnforth with another Charolais from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness selling at £2180.
