Store Cattle

A slightly smaller entry of cattle forward this week, with 300 going under the gavel. There was a leaner, plainer entry of cattle with strong quality cattle still a good trade. The day’s trade topped at £1460 three times, firstly for a trio of Angus Steers from J & H Davies, Cabus, secondly for a British Blue Steer from JA & LR Wilson, The Green and lastly for a Charolais Steer, again from JA & LR Wilson. Limousin Steers sold to £1400 from GF & EE Holt, Preston and Herefords sold to £1120 from I & ME Askew, New Hutton who also sold others to £1090. The heifer trade was topped at £1210 by a British Blue from L & A Duckett, Preston and an Angus from R Oldfield, Yealand Redmayne.

Cast Cows

There was 119 Cast Cows today which saw a plainer show of cows with best meated cows a slightly sharper trade, but well in line with the national average. Topping the day’s trade was a Hereford Steer selling to 194.5p/kg or £1118 from DH & M Kellet & Sons, Thurnham. Cows sold to a top price of 149.5p/kg for a Blonde from SJ & NS Wood, Windermere and also for a Limousin from Ballacutchel Farms. Heifers also sold to 149.5p/kg for a Limousin from DH & M Kellet & Sons. An overall market average of 109p/kg was achieved.

Calves

A reduced entry of calves this week saw a cracking British Blue Bull Calf from R & V Walmsley top the trade at £420. This was followed by a Hereford Bull calf selling to £315 from JR Gorst, Dolphinholme. A few Angus Bull calves in this week sold to £265 from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale. The Heifer calf trade peaked at £280 from JR Gorst, with Angus’ from the same good home selling to £245.

Black and white calves sold to a strong trade topping at £125 from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.
