Spring Lambs

A smaller entry of spring lambs forward this bank holiday sold to an overall market average of 232p/kg. A shortage of best quality lambs this week saw the best quality in highest demand. Beltexs sold to 270p/kg from Bargh Contractors, Heath with Oxcliffe. Texels sold to a top of £99 from PW & DW Roskell, Pilling.

Prime Hoggs

There was an entry of over 400 Prime Hoggs forward this week selling to an overall average of 187p/kg with an SQQ 197p/kg. Top pence per kilo this week was 233p/kg from AG Butler, Hambleton for Beltex hoggs with others to 230p/kg from the same good home. Texels sold to 224p/kg and 218p/kg from Barker Farms, Cockerham. Top price per head today was £106 for Texels from T & E Burrow, Sylne with others Texels selling to £103 AG Butler who also sold Beltex hoggs to £100 and £99. Texels also sold to £100 from V & EJ Chadwick & Sons, Sowerby with Charollais selling to £99 from RS & IM KEllet, Cockerham and Suffolks to £98 from JA Lambert, Out Rawcliffe. Plenty of pens of Continental Suffolk lambs easily sold within the nineties. Hill bred sheep saw Cheviots sell to £94 from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine. Gritstones topped at £89.50 from KA Purtill, Wigan with Mules and Mashams selling to £88 from DC Miller, Claughton-on-Brock.

Cast Sheep

Once again, over 100 cast sheep forward at Lancaster selling to another strong trade. Topping the market today was a Hampshire cast tup from Mrs L Dawson, Dolphinholme, with Texel tups selling to £100 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Ewes topped at £96 for Continentals from WG & RG Riley, Chorley with Texel ewes to £94 from S Wilson & Son. Plenty of Continental ewes easily sold in the eighties today. Hill bred ewes saw Cheviots sell to £80, Scotch Blackfaces to £78 with strong pens of Mules and Mashams in the early seventies.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

There was a strong trade for Sheep with Lambs this week with plenty of people ringside looking to purchase. Leading the way this week was Suffolk ewes with Twin Lambs at Foot selling to £195 from Messrs Hey & Sons, Quernmore. Broken mouthed Mule ewes with Twin lambs at Foot sold to £180 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Other pens of Mule ewes with twin lambs at foot sold to £175 from Messrs Hey & Sons, £172 from W Pinder Jnr, Newton in Bowland and £170 from LE & A Ridding, Selside. Sheep with singles sold to a top of £128 from W Pinder Jnr with Masham Ewes and Texel lambs. There was an overall market average of £55.15 per life.
