Store Cattle
The weekly sale of Store Cattle at NWA Lancaster saw a good entry of strong cattle forward with buyers present for all classes and types. Cattle continue to be a competitive trade with vendors suited with prices achieved. Steers sold to a top price of £1300 for both British Blue x and Simmental x from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale closely followed by L Parsons & Son, Levens selling Limousins at £1290 with £1280 achieved on several occasions by J Oddie & Son, Blackburn, W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe, EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet. Other strong steers generally sold between £1080 to £1200. Younger cattle continue to sell to a competitive trade at Lancaster Auction selling to £1020 for Limousin x from Blacklidge Bros, Bolton with others achieving £850 to £920.
Dairy bred steers sold to £1160 for Montbeliardes from D & N Davis, Garstang with British Friesian selling to £1150 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale and Holstein Friesian to £1110 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. All steers today averaged £1044.
Store Hefiers sold to a top price of £1230 for both Aberdeen Angus and British Blues from R & DM Rossall & Son, Pilling with other stronger heifers generally selling at £1050 to £1200. Plenty of interest in younger heifers for summer grazing selling to a top price of £890 for Limousin x from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet with other younger grazing heifers selling between £700 and £850. All heifers forward today sold to a market average of £918.
The sale next week will include the monthly catalogued sale of stirks with an anticipated entry of 150. Vendors encouraged all classes of cattle promptly by 2pm Monday to assist with canvassing buyers for the sale as it will be bank holiday Friday.
Cast Cows
A much larger entry of cull cows sold to a competitive trade with buyers present for all classes and types. Only a small number of beef cows forward today sold to 129.5p/kg for a Limousin x from M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe with the top-grossing beef cow being £762 for a Limousin x from Cote Farm Partnership.
Heavy well-fleshed dairy cows sold to a top price of 129.5p/kg for a Friesian from D Hargreaves & Son Ltd, Kirkham with others generally selling between 119.5p/kg to 125.5p/kg. Medium dairy cows were generally selling at 105p/kg to 115p/kg with the leaner parlour types 85p/kg to 100p/kg depending on age and quality. Top-grossing dairy cow was £982 again from D Hargreaves, Kirkham.
OTM Heifers sold to a top price of 149.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham with others to 147.5p/kg from Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, Bilsrow. Top-grossing OTM heifer this week was £953 from a Holstein Friesian from Holstein Friesian from Lawsons Farm Ltd.
A good show of cull cows were forward today and selling above vendors expectation with an overall market average of 106p/kg achieved for all sold.
Calves
There was a smaller entry of calves on offer today, however the quality of calves were very well sold.
J & G Thornley, Roseacre sold British Blue 3-month-old bull calves £400. The same vendor also sold Angus heifers at 3 months old to £240. AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel sold a run of Blue calves with bulls to £315, £305 and £300. Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale sold Blue bulls at 1 month old to £300.
T & G Parkinson, Out Rawcliffe sold Charolais heifers to £235. JE & SM Seedall, Mellor sold Limousin heifers to £190 and Angus heifers to £160.
