Calf Report

A sale of predominately younger calves today saw a top price of £455 for a British Blue x from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others selling to £400 from JP&C Robson, Preston and £370 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe. A run of Limousin x bull calves from A&L Gardner, Quernmore sold to £305 and with others at £295. Charolais sold to £305 from G J& G Billington, Garstang. Heifer calves sold to £290 for Limousin x from A & L Gardner, Quernmore, British Blue x to £285 from J P& C Robson, Preston.
Dairy bull  calves sold to £170 for a Holstein Friesian from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale who sold others to £140, younger ones generally sold around £40-£60 depending on quality and type. A Fleckievh bull from J E & S M Seedall, Blackburn sold at £115.
Several weaned stirks forward selling to £695 for Hereford x steers from S Ashcroft, Euxton. With recently weaned British Blue x heifers from AW & AM Park & Son, Ellel selling at £380 with Aberdeen Angus x from the same home selling to £320.

Store Cattle

Another strong show of store cattle forward for the weekly sale at Lancaster Auction Mart. Saw £1680 achieved for a Hereford x steer from R Townsend, Freckleton closely followed by Charolais x steer selling to £1620 from J M Haddow, Hincaster with a ring full of Aberdeen Angus x steers from T Robson & Son, Singleton achieving £1600. Dairy bred steers sold to £1450 for a Fleckvieh from J&H Bland & Son Ltd, Levens with Montbeliarde selling for £1430 from J Lamb, Lancaster who also sold Holstein Friesian to £1280. All steers today averaged £1241.
A Limousin x heifer from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine topped the heifer section achieving £1440 with Aberdeen Angus x from JT & GV Dobson, Clitheroe achieving £1350 with others at £1340 from W T Eastham & Sons, Preston with British Blue x achieving 1290 from B & J Preston, Caton. All heifers today averaged £1163.

OTM Cattle

Cull cows saw an overall market average of 173p/kg with over half the entry being dairy bred cattle. Heavy well finished beef cows topped at 217.5p/kg for a Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son, Selside with Limousin x selling to 209.5p/kg from Pilling Hall, Pilling. Beef cows suitable for further finishing regularly achieving 165-185p/kg depending on breed and type. Dairy cows sold to 211p/kg for a Friesian from EW & CR Clegg & Son, Stalmine with others to 211.5p/kg from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse and 119.5p/kg from Cote Farm Partnership, Carnforth.
Heavy well fleshed dairy cows regularly achieving 175p/kg-190p/kg with medium type cows ranging from 150-175p/kg with parlour type cows selling to 120p/kg-140p/kg. Top grossing cow today was a Holstein Friesian from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale achieving £1620 closely followed by a Stabiliser from J A & R Geldard & Sons, Levens at £1558. All cull cows averaged £1105.
OTM heifers saw a top price of 239p/kg and £1504 for a Blonde from MJ Whitworth, Bolton Le Sands with others selling to 231.5p/kg for a Stabiliser J A Geldard & Sons, Levens and £1398 for a Hereford from K H Knowles, Inskip. Dairy heifers sold to 194p/kg and £1332 for a Norwegian Red from J & H Bland & Son Ltd, Levens.
OTM steers sold to 227p/kg and £1501 for an Aberdeen Angus x from C G Birkett, Carnforth with others selling to 209.5p/kg and £1382 for a Holstein Friesian from L A Bradshaw, Stalmine.
Single cull bull today achieved 157p/kg and £1456 for a British Blue from V & S Fitzell, Much Hoole.
