Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auction Mart Sale of Calves, OTM, Dairy and Store Cattle, Friday 19th April 2024.

The sun shined bright on NWA Lancaster at its popular weekly cattle sale, with all sellers extremely well suited with prices achieved.

OTM Cattle to 264p/kg and £1887

OTM AND CULL CATTLE

Overall market averaged of 185p/kg achieved for all cull cows forward. 75% being dairy cows. Beef cows sold to a top of 264.5p/kg for Limousin from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale with other Limousin selling to £1806 from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine. Other heavy well fleshed beef cows regularly 190-210p/kg and £1200-£1400. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 244.5p/kg for a young Holstein Friesian from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham with others 195-215p/kg, medium types 175-190p/kg with leaner parlour type cows 130-150p/kg. Top grossing being a Holstein Friesian from Barker Farms, Carnforth achieving £1818 with other stronger end dairy cows £1350-£1500. OTM dairy heifers sold to 239.5p/kg on 3 occasions with others regularly 205-230p/kg topping at £1544 with others at £1524 and £1463. OTM steers sold to 229.5p/kg and £1168. Stock bulls selling to 224.5p/kg for a British Blue and £1887 for Aberdeen Angus.

STORE CATTLE

Store cattle sold to another exceptional trade, with steers averaging £1368 and heifers £1242 for an entry compromising of a larger number of summering type cattle. Best steers sold to £1880 for Hereford x from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling with Aberdeen Angus x to £1760, Simmental to £1760, British Blue x to £1730, Limousin x to £1720 and Charolais x to £1640. Dairy steers sold to £1450 for Black & Whites with others at £1420 and £1400. Younger steers generally £1200-£1350. Heifers sold to £1700 for Aberdeen Angus x again from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling with other Aberdeen Angus x to £1600, Simmental x to £1550, British Blue x to £1520, Charolais x to £1510. Younger heifers generally £1180-£1300.

CALVES

Packed ringside of buyers saw best rearing bull calves sell to £545 for a Limousin x from D & M Foster with sold others at £525 with British Blue x from £490 from JP & C Robson, Garstang. Other medium beef bulls £320-£400 with younger rearers £260-£300. Dairy bulls sold to £185 for a Holstein Friesian from J & G Thornley, Kirkham with other medium rearers generally £80-£120. Rearing heifer calves sold to £565 for Charolais x from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with a super of entry of British Blue x heifers (6 week old) from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe regularly £300-£370, with younger heifers £240-£300. Several weaned calves forward today saw 7 month old British Blue steers from Throstle Nest Farms, Pilling sell to £880 who also sold British Blue x heifers sold to £790 and £760. 4 month old British Blue x heifers from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham sold to £615 for a ring full with others regularly £550-£600. 12 week old Aberdeen Angus bulls from J & G Thornley, Kirkham sell to £500 with others £470-£490.

Already entered for next week: 50 weaned (3-5 month old) from several local farms to include Hereford x, Charolais x, Aberdeen Angus x and British Blue x bulls, heifers and steers.
