Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, Stirks, OTM Cattle and Store Cattle - Friday 30th July 2021

CALVES AND STIRKS


Lancaster held its monthly sale of stirks which saw a slightly up and down trade, good quality grazing type cattle selling to a very strong trade with both heifers and bullocks eagerly bid for, more could have been sold to the advantage of vendors. Stirks which had not been turned out were met with slight resistance today, as the weather has turned wet and trashy and buyers not wanting to over extent the winter with housing cattle early.
Leading the way today was yearling Aberdeen Angus bullocks selling to £955 from Sam Ashcroft, Exton with Montbeliarde bullocks from the same home selling to £890. A nice run of yearling Charolais heifers from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton sold to £940 and £930. Native bred bullocks always met plenty of demand in the Lancaster ring with some good runs selling to £910 for a pair of Angus’s from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston. A pen of six Hereford bullocks from PD Anderton, Scorton sold to £885 with angus bullocks from the same home to £830. Continental bullocks saw British Blues to £860 and Limousin to £810 from R&J Parkinson, Preesall and plenty more yearling bullocks selling around the £800 mark. The bull trade today peaked at £720 for Angus’s from O&H Melling, Kirkham.
There was an entry of 93 calves forward today selling to a slightly easier trade than seen over the previous weeks with Lancaster being well out ahead of other local centres. Weaned British Blue bull calves sold to £550 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. British Blue bull calves sold to £440 from H&C Pickervance, Kirkham. Hereford bull calves peaked at £420 from TE & N Kidd, Ellel.
Heifer trade this week peaked at £440 for a Charolais from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. British Blue heifers sold to £415 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. Plenty of quality calves still easily selling in the £400 region.


STORE CATTLE

Lancasters weekly sale of store cattle boasted a larger entry of 250 forward, a more mix entry of cattle forward today with less close to finish cattle on the market today. Leading the way today at £1460 was a pair of Aberdeen Angus bullocks from EE Thornton and sons, Heaton, with Aberdeen Angus bullocks from the same good home selling to £1390 and £1380. Also matching £1460 was a Limousin bullock from David Preston, Caton. Other noted prices today was a pair of Aberdeen Angus bullocks selling to £1390 from A&B Pickthall, Hincaster. This was closely followed by a pen of three Angus bullocks to £1380 from RH Dodgson, Burton in Lonsdale. Plenty of strong short-term bullocks easily selling in excess of the £1300 mark. Dairy bullocks today topped at £1300 for Fleckviehs from JS Clark & Sons, Catforth with other Fleckviehs selling to £1290 from JBL & I Ellis, New Hutton. Black and White bullocks peaked at £1260 from CE & MA Hewitt, Forton.
KH&D Holden & Son, Pilling led the heifer trade today selling British Blues to £1370 and Limousins to £1350. A pen of five Aberdeen Angus heifers from L Parsons & Sons, Levens sold to £1350. Dairy heifers sold to £1220 for a pair of black and whites from EW & RM Towers, Hornby.

OTM CATTLE


The weekly sale of OTM cattle saw numbers over the hundred mark, with 113 forward. Trade would be as good as seen in recent weeks, with a plainer show of cows on offer. Topping the trade today in the OTM Friesian section at £1233.75 was T Taylor, Woodplumpton whom also sold others to £1220.55. J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe also broke the £1200 mark selling a Friesian to £1213.80. Ayrshire OTM cattle topped at £1116 from JE & S Seedall, Blackburn. Beef OTM cows topped at £1232.50 per head for an Aberdeen Angus from Ballacutchel Farms. Limousin OTM cows topped at £1205 from TA Chapman & Son, Helsington. OTM cow prices topped at 224.5p/kg for a Charolais from T&M Pye & Partners, Lancaster. Limousin cow topped at 194.5p/kg from TA Chapman, Helsington. Friesian cows also topped at 194.5p/kg from WA Ward & Son, Slyne with others to 189.5p/kg from R&A Jolleys, Cabus. OTM heifers saw Limousins at 229.5p/kg from MW&M Hodgson, Grange over sands with other beef bred heifers at 209.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from C Hargreaves & Son, Overton. With Friesian today at 189.5p/kg from J Bargh & son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Dairy OTM heifers saw top price per head at £1173 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe with others at £1145 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Cast steers saw Friesians to 204.5p/kg or £1102 from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton. With others at 187.5p.kg or £1051 from WG Farms, Cockerham. Cast bulls saw more on the market today selling to £1728 for a Limousin from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton. All OTM cows today averaged 142.64p/kg, with OTM heifers averaging 194.5p/kg. More OTM cattle are require next week to satisfy our buyer’s demand.
